Verdi's "La Traviata" with Carreras

(performance date Oct 24,1992)

The long lines at the box office left no doubt: a star is expected. Jose Carreras gave a guest performance as Alfredo that still is a special opera evening, even for Vienna.  Before I flew back to Zürich I was able to watch the first act and his aria at the beginning of the second. Enjoyable were the vocal condition and the acting effort of the singer who can still drive his fans to a storm  of enthusiastic applause. A real pleaser was the excellent conductor Fabio Luisi, a Verdi interpreter of special distinction. An appropriate parting from the every day opera evening in Vienna. Imre Fabian
