Puccini's "Tosca" with Carreras
21.3.79
The conductor of the "Josef" premiere, Kjell Ingebretsen, will also be mentioned here in another link. For the Norwegian born, who studied at the Stockholm music conservatory, a student of Herbert Blomstedt, conducted at my second opera evening in Stockholm  Puccini's "Tosca" with such a theatre spirit and so much emotion for Puccini's style that one must keep an eye on this musician. Inspired also by the celebrated star guest of the evening, Jose Carreras's extraordinary Cavaradossi, made one sit up and take notice of the very attractive Karin Mang-Habashi. A real discovery for me was the strong voice of Jerker Arvidson as Scarpia: an excellent singer and outstanding actor. The staging by Bengt Petersen was impressive with complete control of the performers.  Outstanding also in the opera, with Swedish singers almost a matter of course, were Paul Hoeglund as Mesner and Lars Kullenbos as police informer Spoletta.

The audience enthusiastically clebrated the singers,  here in the "cool North" , one almost thought to be transferred to Milan. This too is opera in Stockholm in the year of 1979.
